Every day is a beach day and every day is different on Gran’s island in the Salish Sea: climbing big-leaf maples, eating blackberries, exploring tide pools, sandstone caves, visiting an ancient midden and petroglyphs, and watching a neighbour carving an eagle out of a cedar log, and maybe even seeing orcas.

Excerpt from island in the Salish Sea

Sometimes I build forts of driftwood tangles

Or explore the sandstone caves.

Sometimes I search for sea cucumbers or

decorator crabs in the tide pools, or we eat

Clams and roast marshmallows around a beach fire.

But every day we swim, even if it rains.

Reviews

“Lovely, atmospheric watercolor illustrations show the girl and her grandmother spending idyllic weeks together exploring the beach…The story unfolds with a calm, peaceful tone…An informative and entertaining tale of an intriguing location and a warm family relationship.” (Kirkus Reviews 2018-07-11)

“A good addition to a public or primary school library collection for a quiet read-aloud as an introduction to summer. It is a fine depiction of coastal life, but it also evokes warm feelings of family.” (CM Magazine 2018-10-05)

Author’s Inspiration

From the author…

I have loved the northwest coast since my first visit here when I was 18. The Gulf and San Juan Islands are some of the most beautiful in the world. The fora and fauna are as fascinating as the families who have chosen to live here, today, and in years gone by. I hope you will be lucky enough to visit some of the islands in Salish Sea one day, but in the meantime, here is a little bit of our story.
