Hurray! Philippa Gregory has a young adult novel coming

Great news for historical fiction fans.  Philippa Gregory will be releasing her first book for young adults next summer with Simon & Schuster UK Children’s.  I’m so excited as I totally loved The Boleyn Girl (FYI, the book was so much better than the movie).  And I devoured her other books including:  The Queen’s Fool, The Constant Princess and The Virgin’s Lover.  With a PhD in 18th Century Literature, it’s no surprise that Ms. Gregory is a master at creating richly layered stories with authentic historical backgrounds while maintaining tension and intrigue. I can hardly wait to see what she produces for the young adult market.

Two publishers, two best sellers!

It’s always nice to get a bit of good news.  Just heard  through a writer friend, the wonderful Marsha Skrypuch,  that A Pod of Orcas is Fitzhenry and Whiteside’s number  one selling title…and that includes both adult and  children’s books!  Hurray!  Not only that, but Orca Books  number one seller is another one of my picture  books, Jessie’s Island, which has been a continuous best  seller for the last 19 years!

Sci/Why: a science blog for kids and Adults

As a former science teacher, I love catching up on what’s going on in the world of science, so it was a treat to hear about a relatively new science blog launched by a group of writers who specialize in science for kids.  It’s called Sci/Why, and it’s fabulous. At Sci/Why, you can get questions answered, read book reviews and articles, and catch up on resources for kids and adults.  The articles are as diverse, covering a variety of science topics that include: geology, dragonflies, eyesight, and dinosaurs to name just a few. The common thread  (aside from science) in all the articles was that each was engaging, informative, assessable, and well written.  Bravo to the creators and contributors of Sci/Why.  Be sure to check them out.

The cat is out of the bag

My former publisher, Gail Winskill has started a new press.  I’m super excited.  They are starting out with three fabulous authors, who have all been edited by Ann Featherstone, my long-time editor.  I just know that this new publishing house for children’s titles will be great.
