It was a beautiful day yesterday, so we decided that a walk on French Beach was just the thing. French Beach is the first place along the west coast of Vancouver Island that is not sheltered by Washington’s Olympic Peninsula Washington. Beyond Sooke, French Beach is rainforest country, with big trees, dripping in moss and lichen, and waves that toss giant logs around as if they were mere matchsticks. At this time of the year it’s it’s deserted, and we virtually had the beach to ourselves. It’s a little piece of heaven.

Lovely, lovely, Sheryl. All the muted and misted colours in your wonderful photos are echoed in the tiny stones along that log.
Right now, I’m looking past the red lighted candles on my office windowsill at falling snow. I can see it shedding past the streetlamp across the street. Two very different worlds on December 18th!

I love it there. I love everything about it, the smell of sea salt and fir and moss all mixed together, the sound of the surf and gulls and the feast of sunset glow on the water, and the fog bank hanging over the Olympic Mountains to the south. It’s so very wonderful to be living within driving distance of this magnificence.
