37 pitches but only 2 winners!

It’s time to announce the two winners of the picture book pitches for “Random Acts of Kindness for Writers.”

Thirty-seven pitches were submitted so it took me a while to get through them all.  The two I’ve chosen are: Janet’s pitch for an Emily Carr story, and Eleanor’s pitch for a story about banishing bedtime fears.  Congratulations to all of you who pitched.  Keep working on those stories, and keep honing your pitch!  The winners will be receiving an email in the next few days requesting their manuscripts for a free critique.

Zamoof! Magazine

Twitter is awesome for keeping up with news, but I particularly like it for meeting new people and discovering new books and magazines.  I came across this very cool magazine I hadn’t even heard of until Twitter sent me a notice that Zamoof! Magazine was following my tweets.  So, I checked them out and they’re awesome.

So, I’m passing along this discovey to my followers.

is  an on-line and print magazine for kids who are 7-12.  It’s packed with activities like: secret code contests, cupcake recipes, puzzles, comics, interviews, and articles.  In fact, the latest issue has a feature interview with Steven Spielberg, the producer and director of “The Adventures of TinTin,” “ET,” and a whack of other really great films. If you want to contribute to the magazine, here are some ideas for what to send in. Check out Zamoof! today and help them to celebrate their 5th anniversary!

Rip Leo Dillon

Saying goodbye to another one of children’s literature’s greatest talents.  Leo Dillon 1933-2012.  Irene Gallo has a very moving tribute here.  These images are a few painted by the incredible husband and wife team of Leo and Diane Dillon.  I once had the very good fortune of hearing them speak, and their message of collaboration was as strong as the art they created.  My heart goes out to Diane who has lost a husband and artistic partner.

Neil Gaiman Shares ‘Secret Freelancer Knowledge’ – GalleyCat

Neil Gaiman Shares ‘Secret Freelancer Knowledge’ – GalleyCat.  Neil Gaiman, one of my favorite authors, passes on great advice for students graduating from University Of The Arts in Philadelphia.

The best advice he ever received came from novelist Stephen King. Here is Gaiman’s secret freelancer knowledge:

You get work however you get work, but keep people keep working in a freelance world (and more and more of today’s world is freelance), because their work is good, because they are easy to get along with and because they deliver the work on time. And you don’t even need all three! Two out of three is fine. People will tolerate how unpleasant you are if your work is good and you deliver it on time. People will forgive the lateness of your work if it is good and they like you. And you don’t have to be as good as everyone else if you’re on time and it’s always a pleasure to hear from you.

Dragon boating for MS

Gorgeous day for dragon boat sprints.  Part of our team joined with another from our club that needed extras.  We didn’t have any on the water practice time, but we won one of our three races…not bad for the first race day of the season.  Here’s a picture taken by one of our team members.  The sun is shining, the sky and water are blue, and everyone was smiling.  A great day, especially considering that  we were fundraising for MS.  Don’t know what the total was, but every bit helps.

Dragon Boat Super Sprints…come watch

If you are in Victoria this weekend and you love dragon boat racing, come cheer us on at the Gorge Super Sprints.  We are the VCKC United Dragon Boat Team.  It’s  a fundraiser for the MS Society, so don’t forget your wallets!

Franklin; the stamp

Franklin the turtle is a picture book character who also became a television cartoon.  Now he’s a Canadian stamp too!  Hurray Franklin, and hurray to Paulette Bourgeois and Brenda Clark, his creators.

YouTube Time Machine is a fabulous research tool

I recently came across a very helpful research tool for writers called YouTube Time Machine.  You can view videos clips from 1860 to present with over 10,000 videos available.  It’s totally awesome and can help you with specifics and to capture the general sensibility of the period you’re writing in. You can find movie trailers, sports or cultural events, commercials, and current events. Thanks to GalleyCat for the heads up on this.

Here’s an example of TV commercial from 1954. There are 63 other videos from this year!
