Kate Middleton & Anne of Green Gables

I’m not much of a royalty buff, but judging by the newspaper headlines during the young royal’s wedding and North American tour, there are lots of you out there.  One tidbit I picked up that I loved though, was that Kate Middleton was a real fan of Anne of Green Gables when growing up. Check out this meeting between the Duchess and the current star during a visit to Prince Edward Island. (Tip: fast forward to the last half of the video)

The last big screen Harry Potter

The new Harry Potter movie comes out tonight at midnight.  Kids and adults who are now old enough to have grown up with Harry Potter will be lining up to catch the last in what has been a decade long dance with book characters that have become larger than life.  Here’s what what of my fav. local humor writers had to say.

This was a wedding weekend

This weekend I went to Devon and Channa’s wedding. They were so beautiful dancing together that it made me cry, hence the slightly out of focus picture.  It’s so wonderful to watch my daughter’s friends grow up and I love that I’m still so connected to them.

I passed by Vancouver’s sympathy riot wall…

Some of you may not have heard, but the last game of Stanley Cup finals for hockey took place in Vancouver, BC last week.  When Vancouver lost the game, a riot ensued.  It was a little shocking, but shouldn’t be a huge surprise given that 100,000 people were (many of them young males full of testosterone and alcohol). There are huge questions about about why, but the thing that really impressed me was that huge number of people who showed up the next day, alerted through social media sites, to clean up.  A spontaneous outpouring has ensued on the boarded up windows that were smashed.  Words are powerful tools for healing, even after something so terrible.  Yesterday I was in Vancouver and I passed by some the boarded up shops wall where thousands have posted about what a fabulous city Vancouver is despite the riot.   Here are a few pictures I snapped.

Welcome to my new site

Hey there. Life is about learning and that’s exactly what I’m doing here in Vancouver this evening…learning about WordPress with my very patient teacher Jared Hunt.  I’m starting a new site which I’m so excited about because it’s one I can control.  But there is a downside; there’s a learning curve here people, so check back often.  And, thanks for your patience while I figure things out.

National Aboriginal Day & Summer Solstice Today

Today is the summer solstice, but also National Aboriginal Day.  I’m hoping to get to a few of the activities to celebrate with my First Nations and Metis friends.  Just about right now, a Salish Welcome Totem is being raised at the Victoria Native Friendship Centre.  I’ll be there in spirit, and will try to get down soon to take a picture of it for you.

The Guardian’s top 100 Picks for Non-Fiction

The Guardian posted their 100 top picks for non-fiction.  Sadly, there were quite a few of the titles that I hadn’t read, but then I do tend more toward fiction, so I suppose I can be forgiven. Here are a few that I read, although I confess that when it came to Hawkings’ A Brief History of Time, it was more of a “tried to read” kind of thing.

It makes me wonder if anyone has put a similar list together for kid’s non-fiction?

The cat is out of the bag

My former publisher, Gail Winskill has started a new press.  I’m super excited.  They are starting out with three fabulous authors, who have all been edited by Ann Featherstone, my long-time editor.  I just know that this new publishing house for children’s titles will be great.
