Combating the downside to being a writer…too much sitting!

One of the biggest downsides to being a writer is too much sitting!  Training for a 10k run is a great way to combat one of the main downsides to my career choice. I’ve been working up to running the 10k since January, so am so excited to be running it…and it isn’t even raining!  Here’s my number with high tech time chip built in…and here I am with my running partner Trish.

There were more than 14000 of us at the start line!  There were lots of people cheering us on and we had music at every kilometre to keep us going.  Here are the Tyko Drummers that were near kilometre 6.  Talk about motivation!

This is why I write…

This year is the 20th anniversary of my second picture book, Jessie’s Island, and I’m delighted to tell you that it’s still in print.  Here’s a letter I received earlier this week from a grade two/three teacher, Melody Watson.

This is why I write…

Dear Sheryl

I just wanted to drop you a note to tell you how very much my students and I enjoy your books.  In particular, we love Jessie’s Island.  We live on a very small island on the north end of Vancouver Island.  We feel very connected to your story and feel a lot like Jessie does about her island.  We connect with other classes around the world through our blog and they are often intrigued with the idea of living on a little island like we do.  They always have a lot of questions to ask, and like Thomas they often wonder what on earth we do here for fun.

Recently my students wrote about our island for our school paper.  We have added their writing to our blog and we thought you might like to see the work you inspired.

Thank you for your beautiful words and  inspiration!

Tonight’s dragon boat paddle

Great paddle tonight with my dragon boat team.  We’re really coming together as a team.  The sun was just sinking when we pulled in to the dock tonight.  Hard to beat.

The Boss

Two more days before my trip to LA to see Bruce Springsteen.  Yes folks, I’m talking about “The Boss” and the Wrecking Ball Tour with the fabulous E Street Band

The Rising may just be my favorite album of all time, so when I was offered the chance to see it’s creator in LA, I practically  lept out of my jeans. Love might not be a strong enough word for the  way I feel about this guy’s music.  His songs are stories I have grown up.  His lyrics make me laugh, cry, and celebrate.  Some take pain and hurt to a whole new level and others make me glad to be alive. He speaks to a generation in a way that every artist hopes for.  On top of all that, Bruce has incredible sex appeal. Do I sound like a groupie or what!

50 Marketing Tips for Under $50 Bucks

If you’re just getting started in the kid’s book business, Tina Nicholas Curray has a great blog called Tales from the Rushmore Kid that is well worth checking out. She does tons of interviews with industry people and has a very useful list of 50 Marketing Tips for Under $50 bucks that you may want to keep in mind for when you first book hits the stores or e-readers.  Tips include things like acquiring a domain name, sending out review copies, affordable business cards, plan a contest or give-away, pitch an appearance to local TV and radio stations, and visiting the main branch of your local library.  She advises against book signings as their day has passed.  If you live in Canada, be sure to send a copy of your book to the Canadian Children’s Book Centre, and contact your local Children’s Literature Roundtable to let them know about your new book.  They might either book talk your book, or consider having you speak at one of their programs.

And if you find something that works, remember to pass the suggestion on to fellow writers.  One of the best things about publishing for kids, is how this community of writers, illustrators and bloggers support one another.

Celebrating 24 years of friendship

For many years I’ve been going away with a small group of women friends for a few days. I’ve just returned from our 24th trip together.  Eating, drinking, talking, sharing stories and poems and catching up with each others lives. We’ve been through so much together.  I have shared virtually every story I’ve written with these women.  They always have my back…and, after all these years, this time together continues to be one of life’s treasures.

Karen Rivers speaking on April 16th

The Victoria Children’s Literature Roundtable is featuring author Karen Rivers for it’s next program on Monday, April 16, 2012 at 7:30 pm at Nellie McClung Library at (Cedar Hill & McKenzie).

Karen Rivers is a fabulous author who has written for middle school, young adult, and adult audiences. She’s a master of the first person narrative that young adult audiences so often find appealing, and she uses it to put her readers in the driver’s seat along with  her quirky characters.  She’ll be talking about how she found her “dream job” as a writer, but anyone who knows Karen or has read her books, wil know that she hasn’t found, but created her dream job through well developed stories that are carefully crafted.

Her most recent novels are What is Real, the XYZ Trilogy, and Barely Hanging On.

***The doors open at 7:00 pm but you’re welcome to arrive early to browse the Cadboro Bay Books table.

Sheree Fitch

Check out this great interview with my awesome writer friend, Sheree Fitch who knows and writes so well about that “between place”.  Thanks  for sharing a Canadian treasure with us.

:( Tax Time

Can’t think of anything I hate quite as much as doing my taxes, especially when it’s sunny…

Saturday morning run and afternoon with author, Julie Lawson

Had a great run today, partly inside…partly outside.  Yuck to rain.  But hurray to hot chocolate after.  Then my friend Julie Lawson came over for tea and a little wordpress session.  She’s actually videotaping this so she can figure it all out later on her own.  Hurray for i-phones and their wonderful little video cameras.
